Gojek, Green SM partner to launch electric taxi service

Gojek, part of Indonesia’s GoTo Group, has partnered with electric taxi provider Green SM to launch the GoGreen SM service on its app.

This feature allows users to book Green SM’s electric taxis directly through the Gojek platform, expanding its range of four-wheeler services.

The collaboration aims to promote emission-free transportation as part of Indonesia’s efforts to reduce air pollution and achieve net-zero emissions.

Deny Tjia, Managing Director of Green SM Indonesia, said that the initiative provides accessible, eco-friendly transport options while supporting government sustainability goals.

This partnership aligns with Gojek’s broader sustainability strategy under the GoTo Group’s Three Zeros targets, which aim for zero emissions.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Indonesia’s 2025 electric vehicle targets still facing significant adoption challenges

Indonesia set ambitious targets back in 2018 for electric vehicles to comprise 20% of total vehicle sales by 2025, including 2 million electric motorcycles and 2,000 electric cars 1.

Despite these goals, adoption has been slow due to specific barriers identified in market research, with surveys showing that while awareness of electric vehicles is relatively high (63% for motorcycles, 46% for cars), willingness to purchase remains low 1.

The partnership between Green SM and Gojek represents a practical step toward overcoming these adoption barriers by making electric transportation more accessible through familiar platforms rather than requiring direct consumer purchases.

This collaboration addresses the road transport sector’s 22% contribution to Indonesia’s greenhouse gas emissions by offering everyday consumers an immediate way to reduce their carbon footprint without the upfront investment of buying an electric vehicle.

2️⃣ Electric taxi market in Indonesia seeing rapid competitive expansion

The Green SM and Gojek partnership follows closely after Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup launched its Xanh SM electric taxi service in Jakarta in December 2024, demonstrating growing competition in Indonesia’s electric mobility market 2.

Vingroup’s ambitious expansion plans include growing their fleet to 10,000 electric vehicles in Indonesia within a year of launch, suggesting significant investment and confidence in the Indonesian market for electric transportation services 3.

This market development indicates that mobility service providers see Indonesia as a key area for electric transportation, with companies racing to establish market share ahead of broader consumer EV adoption.
