Gojek founder Nadiem also probed in Google Cloud graft case
Nadiem Makarim, Indonesia’s education minister from 2019 to 2024, is also being investigated for his potential involvement in a separate corruption case linked to the procurement of Google Cloud services between 2020 and 2022.
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said some suspects overlap with the Chromebook case, as Nadiem was a key decision-maker in both projects.
Nadiem is set to face his first trial at Jakarta’s corruption court over alleged corruption in the procurement of Chromebook laptops.
Five people, including Nadiem and consultant Jurist Tan, have been named as suspects.
The KPK said the two cases will be handled separately due to differences in project management and budgeting, with coordination ongoing with the Attorney General’s Office.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The missing financial details matter more than the headlines suggest
- Chromebook procurement covers 1.2 million devices worth Rp9.3 trillion with alleged state losses of Rp1.98 trillion 1. Reports only list Rp250 billion per year for the Google Cloud deal, not a total 2.
- No contract term is public, so materiality cannot be gauged 2. A five-year run at Rp250 billion per year would total Rp1.25 trillion, but the sources give no duration 2.
- Indonesia Audit Watch (IAW) says 78% of 2020–2022 procurements used direct appointments that skip bidding 1. That raises questions about Google Cloud, vendor ties, and any similar shortcuts.
- Sources do not name the winning vendors or distributors. That gap blocks conflict checks and keeps Alphabet’s legal or financial exposure hard to gauge.
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) vendors should prepare for possible procurement changes in 2025
- These probes could tighten controls at the Ministry of Education in 2025, creating openings for compliance software and procurement analytics.
- Cloud rivals include Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Alibaba Cloud. They should watch re-tenders amid scrutiny of single-vendor specification lock-ins.
- Distributors should watch the 2025 Rencana Umum Pengadaan (RUP), the government’s procurement plan, on the Ministry of Education portal to time outreach 3.
- More open tenders after direct appointments would give smaller resellers a fair shot at education technology work.
