Indonesia’s Central Jakarta Corruption Court has named Nadiem Makarim, Gojek founder and the country’s former education minister, among those accused in a corruption case linked to the procurement of Chromebook laptops.

Prosecutors allege that Makarim, who previously led the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, received 809.6 billion rupiah (US$48.5 million) from the project.

Three other defendants – Sri Wahyuningsih, Mulyatsyah, and Ibrahim Arief – also face charges, with the indictment stating the scheme caused state losses of about 2.1 trillion rupiah (US$126 million).

The charges say the digitalization program’s procurement planning was not based on actual needs, and skipped proper price evaluations, resulting in overpriced devices and purchases that failed to benefit remote regions.
