Gmail launches new tool to manage subscriptions on all devices

Google has launched a new feature for Gmail that helps users manage their subscriptions.

The “Manage subscriptions” tool is now available on the web, Android, and iOS in select countries.

This feature allows users to view and manage their subscription emails in one location, organized by frequent senders.

Users can also unsubscribe from unwanted emails directly, with Gmail sending an unsubscribe request to the sender.

To access the tool, users can click “Manage subscriptions” in the top-left corner of their Gmail inbox.

This feature builds on Gmail’s existing one-click unsubscribe option introduced last year.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Email management evolves beyond spam filtering to tackle “subscription overload”

Gmail’s new “Manage subscriptions” feature represents a significant evolution in how email platforms address inbox clutter beyond traditional spam filtering.

While Gmail’s existing spam filters already block 99.9% of dangerous emails 1, this new feature addresses the growing problem of legitimate but unwanted subscription emails that technically aren’t spam.

This development follows Gmail’s previous one-click unsubscribe tool launched last year, showing Google’s progressive approach to giving users more granular control over their inboxes.

The feature’s design, organizing subscriptions by frequency and volume, directly addresses the psychological burden of email overload, which has become increasingly problematic as the average person’s digital footprint expands across more services.

By introducing tools that help manage “legitimate” but unwanted emails, Google is acknowledging how the nature of email clutter has transformed from obvious spam to marketing emails users initially opted into but no longer want.

2️⃣ Email remains central to digital identity despite messaging alternatives

Google’s continued investment in Gmail features demonstrates email’s persistent centrality to digital life, even as messaging apps and social platforms have proliferated.
