GlobalWafers opens new 12-inch wafer plant in northern Italy

GlobalWafers, a Taiwan-based silicon wafer supplier, has opened a 12-inch wafer plant in Novara, northern Italy.

The facility, known as Fab300, is operated by the company’s Italian subsidiary MEMC Electronics Materials.

The plant is described as the most advanced silicon wafer facility in Italy.

In June 2024, the project received a €103 million (US$119 million) grant from the European Commission and the Italian government to support research and development.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Fab300’s production scale and European chip partnerships remain unclear

  • Fab300 has opened, yet the article leaves out production numbers, such as monthly 300 mm wafer output and the date for full capacity 1.
  • There are no long-term deals made public with STMicroelectronics, GlobalFoundries or TSMC’s European joint venture, European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC) 2. This makes it hard to gauge any reduction in wafer imports beyond pilot runs 2.
  • A subsidy of up to €103 million supports R&D and first industrial deployment (moving from research into initial production) 23. Earlier statements set production for Q3 2024, yet the opening did not share total investment or a timeline to full output 23.
  • Without clear ramp milestones or long-term purchase commitments, any verdict on supply chain impact is premature.

Suppliers can pursue MEMC buying needs for specialty materials and fab services

  • Fab300’s ramp creates near-term needs for chemicals, specialty gases, and ultrapure water systems with abatement gear, plus facilities work 4.
  • Suppliers of chemicals and gases plus cleanroom services should watch MEMC’s purchasing pages for Novara tenders since the 300 mm fab needs different specs than the 200 mm lines 42.
  • The site uses 100% renewable electricity and aims for up to 50% water reuse, which opens room for vendors of fab sustainability tech 3.
  • Hiring plans cover 150 permanent roles plus 600 construction jobs, so training firms or technical staffing agencies can pitch services for Novara’s talent needs 3.
