GlobalWafers expands silicon production with $400m push
GlobalWafers, the third-largest producer of silicon wafers critical in producing computer chips, plans to broaden its production capabilities across the U.S., Italy, Japan, and South Korea amid the semiconductor industry’s rising emphasis on carbon neutrality and supply chain resilience.
The Taiwan-based company intends to establish its state-of-the-art 12-inch wafer fabrication plant in Texas, backed by a US$400 million subsidy from the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act.
This decision represents a departure from GlobalWafers’ previous focus on advanced production solely within Asia, highlighting a trend towards localized manufacturing in light of ongoing global supply chain challenges.
