GlobalFoundries projects Q2 gains on steady chip demand
GlobalFoundries has projected second-quarter revenue of US$1.68 billion, with a margin of plus or minus US$25 million.
This forecast slightly exceeds analysts’ expectations of US$1.67 billion, according to data from LSEG.
Additionally, the company anticipates adjusted earnings of 36 cents per share, plus or minus 5 cents, compared to estimates of 35 cents.
For the first quarter ending March 31, 2025, GlobalFoundries reported revenue of US$1.59 billion, marginally surpassing the forecast of US$1.58 billion.
Auto segment grew in Q1, while smartphone demand, its largest source of revenue, remains weak.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ GlobalFoundries’ strategic positioning in a TSMC-dominated market
GlobalFoundries has deliberately positioned itself as a specialist in mature process technologies rather than competing directly with industry leader TSMC in cutting-edge fabrication.
While TSMC controls 64.9% of the global foundry market with its advanced nodes, GlobalFoundries focuses on power-efficient and reliable chips for automotive and industrial applications 1.
This differentiation strategy reflects the difficult reality of competing with TSMC, which enjoys superior margins and growth. TSMC reported a 35% year-over-year revenue increase to $25.53 billion in Q1 2025, while GlobalFoundries has seen flat to negative growth with Q4 revenues declining 1% year-over-year 2.
The significant performance gap is also reflected in profitability metrics, with GlobalFoundries showing a -3.93% net margin compared to competitors like NXP Semiconductors’ 19.90% 3.
Despite facing margin pressures from high input costs and limited pricing power, GlobalFoundries maintains its position as a top-five global contract semiconductor manufacturer serving diversified end markets.
2️⃣ U.S. chip policy reshaping the competitive landscape
The CHIPS and Science Act represents the most significant U.S. intervention in semiconductor manufacturing in decades, with $53 billion allocated to revitalize domestic production that could particularly benefit U.S.-based GlobalFoundries.
The legislation has already catalyzed over $200 billion in private sector investment announcements across the U.S. semiconductor ecosystem, creating a more favorable domestic manufacturing environment 4.
