Global investment firm to invest $9.9b in Sweden AI center

Brookfield Asset Management plans to invest up to 95 billion Swedish crowns (US$9.9 billion) in an AI-focused data center in Strangnas, Sweden.

The project is expected to create over 1,000 permanent jobs and 2,000 temporary positions during its 10 to 15-year construction period.

The data center’s location is near Stockholm and several university towns, including Eskilstuna, Västerås, Linköping, and Uppsala.

Sweden’s reliable electricity supply and strong infrastructure have attracted companies like Microsoft, Meta, and Alphabet.

Brookfield owns property at the site and will enter a land allocation agreement with the Strangnas municipality.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Sweden’s emergence as Europe’s data center powerhouse

Brookfield’s massive investment continues a pattern of global tech giants choosing Sweden for critical infrastructure.

Major companies including Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and Google have already established operations in Sweden due to its reliable electricity supplies, connectivity infrastructure, and stable political environment 12.

Sweden has seen approximately 200 data centers established over the past decade, with Stockholm now handling over 55% of Nordic internet traffic, cementing its position as a regional connectivity hub 23.

The economic impact extends beyond Brookfield’s projected 1,000 permanent and 2,000 temporary jobs, as the broader Swedish data center colocation market is projected to grow from $210 million in 2023 to $525 million by 2029, representing a 16.5% annual growth rate 3.

This concentration of investment demonstrates Sweden’s success in developing specific competitive advantages that consistently attract infrastructure capital despite competition from neighboring Nordic countries.

2️⃣ AI infrastructure demands reshaping data center economics

Brookfield’s $10 billion investment reflects the extraordinary capital requirements of modern AI infrastructure compared to traditional data centers.

AI workloads require significantly higher power densities, with current racks demanding 40kW to 130kW compared to traditional 17kW densities, necessitating more robust power infrastructure and advanced cooling systems 4.
