Global EV sales up 29%, China, Europe lead growth

Global sales of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles grew by 29% year-on-year in April 2025, totaling 1.5 million units.

China led the market with a 32% increase, selling 900,000 EVs, while Europe saw a 35% rise to 300,000 vehicles.

North America experienced its first decline since September 2024, with a 5.6% drop to 100,000 vehicles. Other regions reported a 50% surge, largely due to increased exports of plug-in hybrids from China.

European automakers are exceeding EU emissions targets, surpassing Tesla’s sales. Tesla’s market share has declined ahead of a planned model revamp.

Chinese EV manufacturers are seeing continued growth, fueled by rising international demand.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Tesla’s European decline reflects broader market realignment

Tesla’s struggles in Europe mentioned in the article are part of a deeper pattern, not just a temporary blip.

In January 2025, Tesla’s European registrations plummeted by 50.4% year-over-year, significantly outpacing the general market contraction 1.

The company saw dramatic country-specific declines, including 62% in the UK, 67% in Denmark, and a staggering 81% in Sweden 2.

Meanwhile, European automakers have capitalized on this shift, with Volvo increasing sales by nearly 30% in the EU and Volkswagen reporting a 20% rise in global EV deliveries 1.

This highlights how quickly market dynamics can change in the EV sector, as European consumers increasingly favor domestic and other foreign brands over Tesla’s aging model lineup.

The situation suggests that maintaining leadership in the EV market requires continuous innovation and market-specific strategies, not just early-mover advantage.

2️⃣ Tariff uncertainty creates ripple effects beyond immediate price increases

The tariff environment referenced in the article has multifaceted impacts on the North American auto industry beyond just depressing sales.
