Global crypto exchange OKX reportedly plans US IPO

OKX, a global cryptocurrency exchange, is reportedly exploring an initial public offering (IPO) in the United States, according to a report by The Information.

In April 2025, the exchange announced plans for US expansion following a US$500 million settlement with the Department of Justice in February.

This settlement resolved allegations that OKX operated a money transmitting business without proper licensing.

As part of its expansion, OKX established its regional headquarters in San Jose, California.

OKX has not commented on the IPO report. This potential move comes amid increasing interest from crypto exchanges in pursuing US listings.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Crypto exchanges following a regulatory maturation pattern toward IPOs

OKX’s journey reflects a broader industry pattern where crypto exchanges resolve regulatory issues before pursuing traditional financial structures like IPOs.

This follows a similar trajectory to other exchanges. OKX paid a $500 million settlement with the DOJ in February 2025 before announcing its U.S. expansion in April and now exploring an IPO 1.

This maturation pattern is becoming common across the industry, with Bullish also filing confidentially for a U.S. IPO after previously abandoning a SPAC merger attempt in 2021 due to regulatory challenges 2.

The success of Circle’s recent IPO, which saw shares surge 168% on their debut, has created significant momentum for crypto exchanges seeking public listings 2.

This evolution signals a significant shift in how digital asset companies approach legitimacy and growth, moving from regulatory gray areas to compliance and traditional capital markets.

2️⃣ 2025 emerging as a landmark year for crypto public offerings

The potential OKX IPO is part of a broader wave of cryptocurrency exchanges pursuing public listings in 2025, representing a new phase in industry development.

This trend builds on earlier milestones, like Argo Blockchain becoming the first cryptocurrency company listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2018, raising US$32.5 million in its IPO 3.
