Global chipmaker STMicroelectronics sees Q2 revenue boost
STMicroelectronics expects revenue of US$2.71 billion for Q2 2025, surpassing analysts’ expectations of US$2.62 billion.
In Q1 2025, the company reported revenue of US$2.52 billion, in line with its forecast of US$2.51 billion.
However, operating income dropped by 99.5% compared to the same period last year, as the semiconductor sector faces a sales decline, especially in automotive and industrial markets.
STMicroelectronics described Q1 as the lowest point of the year and emphasized its focus on innovation to boost product and technology competitiveness.
The company did not provide full-year guidance and noted its outlook does not account for potential impacts from global trade tariffs.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Semiconductor industry approaching a cyclical upswing after extended downturn
STMicroelectronics’ projection of Q1 2025 as the “bottom” aligns with broader semiconductor industry data suggesting a recovery phase is beginning.
The semiconductor industry has faced severe headwinds, with global sales falling 21.6% year-on-year in early 2023, the steepest decline since the financial crisis 1.
In Europe specifically, the component distribution market contracted by 24.7% in 2024, with semiconductors accounting for €4.7 billion of the €5.6 billion total industry decline 2.
Multiple industry forecasts project growth resuming in 2024-2025, with the Semiconductor Industry Association predicting a 13.1% sales increase in 2024 following 2023’s 8.2% decline 3.
STMicro’s Q2 forecast exceeding analyst expectations fits the pattern of previous semiconductor recovery cycles, where companies typically see sequential growth for several quarters after reaching the bottom.
The automotive and industrial sectors, key markets for European chipmakers like STMicro, have been particularly challenged, with Germany experiencing a nearly 42% drop in semiconductor distribution sales 2.
2️⃣ Market valuation signals investor skepticism despite improving outlook
Despite STMicroelectronics’ optimistic sequential growth forecast, the company’s valuation metrics reveal persistent investor caution about the pace of recovery.
