Global AI demand boosts Taiwan manufacturing sentiment in Nov

Business sentiment among Taiwanese manufacturers improved for the fifth consecutive month in November, according to the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER).

TIER’s composite index for manufacturing rose 2.4 points to 94.4, supported by strong global demand for AI-related products.

A survey showed 24% of manufacturers reported better business, up from 17.9% in October, while those reporting worse business fell to 23.1% from 29.8%.

Looking ahead, 23.1% expected improvement, and 23.7% anticipated a decline.

TIER’s service sector index rose 3.1 points to 91.2, while the construction sector index increased 1.1 points to 101.7, marking its sixth month of gains.

Service sector optimism was driven by higher brokerage income and AI development, while construction benefited from public projects and new plant investments.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

TIER’s manufacturing index rose to 94.4 after five months of gains

  • Only 24% saw better business, while 23.1% reported worse conditions, which signals a split outlook rather than broad optimism.
  • Taiwan makes about 90% of the world’s AI servers 1. Foxconn (the world’s largest electronics contract manufacturer) is lifting output. Quanta (a major server and laptop maker) is lifting output as well. Wistron (an Original Design Manufacturer, or ODM) is scaling production 1. This strength sits in one subsector and may hide weakness in other parts of Taiwan’s electronics base.
  • Forward views are split at 23.1% expecting improvement vs 23.7% expecting decline. Firms remain cautious despite AI demand. Caution likely stems from broader headwinds, with the U.S. manufacturing sector in a ninth straight month of contraction 2.

Suppliers can ride Taiwan’s AI server buildout

  • Equipment vendors should target Taiwan’s AI server makers. Contractors in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing can too. Wistron invested New Taiwan dollar (NT$) 5.28 billion to expand in Hsinchu, while Quanta plans to double capacity by end-2026 1.
  • Power demand is rising. That creates work for energy solution providers. Manufacturers face a supply pinch after Taiwan shut its last operating nuclear plant in May 1.
  • Component makers can chase Foxconn’s roughly 40% global AI server share 1. The company is adding production in North America and plans server output in Japan 1.
  • Logistics software vendors should approach these ODMs 1. Supply chain software makers can do the same as the firms move production to the U.S. and Southeast Asia 1.
