GitHub says India's developer base grows to 27 million

GitHub’s developer base in India rose to 27 million in 2026 from 21.9 million in October 2025, Kyle Daigle said in a post on X, adding that the country now accounts for one in seven new developers joining the platform worldwide.

Daigle said India now makes up more than 15% of GitHub’s global user base of over 180 million developers and has become the platform’s largest open source contributor base, with more than 7.5 million contributions to open source AI projects.

GitHub’s Octoverse 2025 data had placed India second by total developers behind the US, which had 28 million, indicating India had not yet overtaken the US on overall count as of October 2025.
