GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke to step down for new venture

Thomas Dohmke will step down as CEO of GitHub at the end of 2025 to start a new venture.

He announced his departure in an internal message to staff on August 11 and will remain at GitHub through the transition.

GitHub, owned by Microsoft, is a US-based platform used by developers to collaborate on code.

Dohmke highlighted milestones like GitHub Copilot’s growth, expanding into new markets, and platform improvements.

GitHub now serves over 150 million developers and hosts more than one billion repositories and forks.

The company said it will continue its mission as part of Microsoft’s CoreAI organization. Details about Dohmke’s successor and the transition plan have not yet been released.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Planned leadership transitions typically yield better long-term outcomes

Dohmke’s announcement of staying through the end of 2025 to guide the transition follows best practices for tech company leadership changes.

A McKinsey study found that 90% of teams with smooth leadership transitions are more likely to meet three-year performance goals1.

The extended timeline allows GitHub to maintain momentum while identifying and onboarding new leadership, particularly crucial given the company’s current success with over 150 million developers and $2 billion in annual revenue2.

This approach contrasts with abrupt departures that can disrupt operations and strategic initiatives, especially for platform companies where developer trust and continuity are essential.

2️⃣ GitHub’s entrepreneurial roots remain strong despite corporate integration

Dohmke’s decision to return to entrepreneurship reflects a broader pattern among tech leaders who built their careers in startup environments before joining large corporations.

GitHub itself was founded by entrepreneurs before Microsoft’s $7.5 billion acquisition in 2018, making it the third-largest deal in Microsoft’s history3.
