GIC-backed battery maker Envision AESC eyes Hong Kong IPO

Envision AESC, an EV and energy storage battery maker backed by GIC and HSG, is weighing a Hong Kong IPO as soon as this year.

The listing could raise US$1 billion to US$2 billion.

The company is working with banks on the deal, though the timing and size could still change.

Envision AESC has production sites in countries such as the US, the UK, France, Spain, China, and Japan.

It became part of Shanghai-based Envision after it acquired a controlling stake in 2019 while Nissan kept a minority holding.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

An IPO could bankroll the battery maker during its global manufacturing buildout

  • Envision AESC is in a fast, expensive expansion. Three overseas sites are due to start in 2025. They include a factory in France, an energy storage line in the US, and a large battery plant in the UK 1.
  • The new UK site underlines the firm’s ability to line up complicated funding. UK state bodies provided financial guarantees, which helped unlock 680 million pounds (US$921 million) of the 1 billion pounds (US$1.35 billion) needed for the project 2.
  • Work extends beyond EV batteries. The energy storage unit has rolled out large projects, including the 1,360 megawatt-hour (MWh) Carrington Energy Storage Project. That makes the company a supplier to UK power grid infrastructure 1.

A tech hardware veteran at the helm suggests a consumer-electronics approach to scale

  • Envision named Wanbiao Wan, previously an executive at smartphone brands Honor and Huawei, as global CEO 3.
  • The hire suggests battery production may move closer to consumer electronics playbooks. That includes high-volume output plus tight supply chain coordination.
  • The strategy is playing out across the US and Europe, with battery manufacturing sites backed by local government support, including in the UK 2.
  • The wider Envision group is also planning “net-zero industrial parks” in places such as Southeast Asia. The aim is integrated low-carbon industrial ecosystems rather than only battery components 4.
