Getty Images signs deal to show photos in ChatGPT

Getty Images, a US-based stock photo and media licensing company, said on June 21 that it signed a display partnership with OpenAI.

Under the deal, images from Getty’s library will appear in ChatGPT’s search and discovery features. Getty shares rose about 200% in premarket trading on June 22.

The companies did not disclose financial terms or say whether Getty’s images would be used to train future OpenAI models.

The agreement marks a shift for Getty. The company had built its own AI image generator and sued Stability AI, although a UK court rejected one of Getty’s secondary copyright claims in that case.

The deal also follows rival Shutterstock’s 2023 six-year partnership with OpenAI, which expanded OpenAI’s access to Shutterstock’s image, video, and music libraries for AI training.

Getty is also awaiting approval for its US$3.7 billion acquisition of Shutterstock. The UK competition watchdog has proposed remedies, while other jurisdictions have cleared the deal unconditionally.
