Germany’s Merck plans $11.3b acquisition of Bio-Techne
Germany-based Merck KGaA plans to acquire US life sciences company Bio-Techne in an all-cash deal worth US$11.3 billion.
Both boards approved the deal, which is expected to close by the end of 2026 or early 2027, subject to shareholder and regulatory approval.
Bio-Techne, which develops research and diagnostic tools, reported US$1.2 billion in net sales for fiscal 2025.
Its protein sciences segment made up about 71% of revenue from specialized proteins, antibodies, immunoassays, reagents, and protein analysis platforms, while diagnostics and spatial biology contributed about 28%.
Bio-Techne said its more than 500,000 products are used by academic researchers, biopharma and biotechnology companies, and clinical diagnostic labs. The company identified cell therapy and protein analysis instruments as growth areas.
For Merck, the acquisition would expand its Life Science division, which generated 8.9 billion euros (US$10.2 billion) in sales in 2024, and add to its existing tools business in lab reagents, consumables, and processing technologies.
