German travel app Trivago acquires Israeli tech firm for $40m

Trivago has acquired Holisto, an Israeli traveltech company focused on hotel room booking and dynamic pricing, for about US$40 million.

Holisto, founded in 2015, developed technology to aggregate real-time hotel prices from various suppliers.

The company had previously raised around US$30 million from investors such as Journey Ventures, Fosun, Fattal Group, 2B.VC, Taya Ventures, and El Al’s investment arm.

Trivago invested US$10 million in Holisto about a year ago.

After the acquisition, Holisto will operate independently. Its roughly 200 employees will remain at the company.

Trivago operates a global hotel price comparison website.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Dynamic pricing technology delivers measurable competitive advantages in travel

Holisto’s specialization in real-time hotel price optimization represents a technology that consistently delivers strong business results across industries.

Companies implementing dynamic pricing strategies typically see revenue growth of 2-5% and margin improvements of 5-10%, with AI-powered systems showing even higher success rates 12.

This explains why Trivago was willing to pay $40 million for a company that had only raised $30 million total. The technology’s proven ability to optimize pricing in real-time creates substantial value in the highly competitive hotel booking market.

Trivago’s CEO Johannes Thomas specifically noted that the acquisition enables “a branded booking experience that increases user satisfaction and drives continued growth,” highlighting how dynamic pricing technology directly impacts both customer experience and business performance 3.

2️⃣ Travel giants are prioritizing technology acquisitions over organic development

Trivago’s acquisition strategy demonstrates how established travel companies are accelerating growth through targeted technology purchases rather than building capabilities internally.

The company reported 17% revenue growth in Q2 2025 and expects Holisto to contribute low double-digit million euro revenue in 2025, showing immediate impact from the acquisition 4.
