General Motors sales fall 5.5% in Q3 as EV demand weakens

General Motors said its third-quarter vehicle sales in the US fell 5.5% year on year to 670,974 vehicles, as weaker electric vehicle demand contrasted with flat sales of internal-combustion models.

Its EV lineup posted declines from a year earlier after a period when incentives had supported demand. GM had earlier offered US$7,500 on some EVs after they lost eligibility for a federal tax credit.

The gap with Toyota also reflected product mix. GM has largely focused on an all-electric future, while broader hybrid offerings are not expected until 2027.

GM also said it planned to release plug-in hybrids in North America, marking a shift from its earlier plan to skip that segment.

Sales of lower-priced GM models rose, with Chevrolet Trailblazer sales up 51% and Buick Envista up 18.4%. Toyota said electrified vehicles made up more than 57% of its quarterly sales.
