General Motors to expand US vehicle-to-grid services

General Motors said on June 9 it would expand vehicle-to-grid services for electric vehicle owners in the US and work with Denver-based battery startup Peak Energy on sodium-ion cells for stationary storage.

The move comes as rising electricity costs and growing demand from AI data centers increase interest in grid-scale battery systems.

GM already offers bidirectional home-backup products and is taking part in Pacific Gas and Electric’s residential vehicle-to-everything pilot in California, where eligible customers can receive up to US$4,500 for qualifying equipment.

The company said the Peak Energy partnership should deliver sodium-ion cells for customer use after 2028.

Peak Energy said it has had grid deployments since August 2025, has more than 6 GWh contracted through 2030, and plans a 4 GWh factory in the US, with production set to start in the first quarter of 2027.

GM is also continuing battery reuse work with Redwood Materials and lower-cost lithium iron phosphate production through Ultium Cells, its joint venture with LG Energy Solution, while seeking utility partnerships nationwide.

Residential electricity prices in the US rose nearly 48% from 12.76 cents per kilowatt-hour in January 2020 to 18.83 cents in March 2026.
