🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Scapia runs on bank partners and a no-fee card with limits

  • Scapia works with banks such as Federal Bank and BOBCARD, Bank of Baroda’s credit card business. The partner bank issues and manages the card, then pays fees to Scapia Technology Pvt. Ltd. for customer acquisition, promotion and cardholder service 1.
  • The main product is a co-branded card with no joining fee, no annual fee, and no foreign exchange markup on overseas spending. The offer targets India’s growing group of digital-first consumers 2.
  • Its Visa and RuPay setup lets cardholders use credit on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions 3. It also covers online purchases, store payments and spending abroad, with one statement for both networks 3.
  • Some benefits come with spending rules. Unlimited domestic airport lounge access requires monthly thresholds, such as a combined 20,000 Indian rupees (US$240) across the Visa and RuPay cards 2.

Funding backs a travel-led co-branded fintech model

  • Scapia centers its business on travel, while partner banks handle card issuance and other regulated work. The company says it is not a bank and does not hold a banking license 4.
  • RuPay ties the card to India’s UPI system, bringing credit into everyday digital payments and rolling those transactions into one credit card statement 5.
  • Scapia Coins can be used for travel bookings inside the Scapia app, a structure that encourages repeat use of its booking platform 6.
  • Peak XV sees room in younger customers. It says Gen Z and millennials account for 50% of all credit card issuance in India, with an annual revenue opportunity of US$80 billion-US$100 billion by 2030 4.
