General Atlantic leads $190m series C for Mexican fintech firm

Mexican fintech firm Klar has raised US$190 million in a series C funding round, valuing the company at over US$800 million.

This round was led by US private equity firm General Atlantic and comprised US$170 million in equity and US$20 million in venture debt.

Investors included existing backers such as Prosus, IFC, Mouro Capital, and Quona Capital, as well as new participants Santander Group, Grupo Televisa, and Grupo Formula.

Klar plans to use these funds to expand its operations in Mexico by advancing product development and exploring growth opportunities.

Founded in 2019, Klar offers app-based financial services aimed at Mexican consumers and small businesses.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Mexico’s fintech ecosystem is maturing with increased consolidation and foreign investment

Klar’s $190 million raise represents part of a broader fintech acceleration in Mexico, where the sector received $865 million across 50 deals in 2024, representing 74% of all venture capital deployed in the country 1.

The Mexican fintech landscape has evolved dramatically from just over 300 startups in 2018 to more than 1,000 providers in 2025, with 803 being Mexico-based and 301 being international entrants seeking opportunity in the market 2.

This maturing ecosystem is witnessing domestic fintechs reporting a 31% increase in revenues as they shift from pure growth to profitability, a transition Klar appears to be navigating successfully with its approach to $300 million in annual revenue 1.

Mexico has significantly closed the funding gap with regional leader Brazil, now capturing approximately 60% of the venture capital historically attracted by Brazil, up from just 34% in 2020. This signals increased investor confidence in the Mexican market 1.

2️⃣ Financial inclusion remains a massive opportunity despite growing fintech competition

Despite the growth in fintech options, Mexico presents a significant financial inclusion challenge with approximately one-third of its population remaining unbanked and many SMEs struggling to access credit 3.

The World Bank reports that only 37% of adults in Mexico have access to an official bank account, creating a substantial target market for companies like Klar that position themselves as alternatives to traditional banking 4.

Cash remains dominant with over 70% of adults using it for daily transactions according to Mexico’s statistics institute. However, digital payment adoption is accelerating, with the payments market forecasted to grow from $103 billion in 2023 to $168 billion by 2028 5.
