Geely Automobile Holdings, a Hangzhou-based Chinese carmaker, said it has introduced AI-powered electric vehicle charging technology that can take a battery from 10% to 70% in under five minutes.

The technology comes as Chinese automakers race to cut charging times amid weaker demand and intensifying competition.

Geely said tests on a Zeekr 001 sedan and a Lynk & Co 10 hybrid took their batteries from 10% to 70% in four minutes and 30 seconds.

Charging to 97% took under nine minutes. Geely said the technology will debut with the latest generation of its smart-charging station, which has peak charging power of 2,250 kilowatts.

The announcement puts Geely up against BYD, which earlier this year said its own charging technology could take electric vehicle batteries from 10% to 70% in five minutes.
