Geely profit falls 27% as China auto market weakens

Geely Automobile Holdings said net income fell 27% to 4.2 billion yuan (US$614 million) in the quarter and missed the 4.5 billion yuan (US$658 million) as China’s auto market weakened after subsidy cuts.

Revenue rose 15% to 83.8 billion yuan (US$12.3 billion) while the company attributed the profit drop to foreign exchange swings.

Geely sold 709,358 vehicles in the quarter and edged past BYD.

BYD also reported a profit drop as both companies faced weaker earnings in China’s price war.

Geely said domestic demand has yet to recover even after it raised its international sales target to 750,000 vehicles from 640,000.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Geely’s Q1 2025 filing recorded a profit surge

  • Geely’s official Q1 2025 results, released in May 2025, recorded a 264% year-on-year rise in net profit attributable to shareholders to 5.7 billion yuan (US$830 million) 1.
  • A broader move into New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), which include battery-powered and plug-in hybrid vehicles, helped lift results 1.
  • NEV sales across Geely brands such as Lynk & Co and Zeekr reached 339,000 units in the quarter. More than half of Geely’s China sales came from NEVs 1.

Geely is expanding overseas through local partnerships

  • Its higher overseas sales target rests on deals with established carmakers instead of building factories and dealer networks from scratch.
  • Geely bought a 26.4% stake in Renault do Brasil, Renault’s Brazilian unit. The deal gives Geely access to Renault do Brasil’s manufacturing operations and sales arm. That includes its industrial complex in São José dos Pinhais, Paraná, plus its dealer network 2.
  • The arrangement gives Renault access to Geely’s EV platform, the GEA new energy architecture. It also helps Chinese car brands grow faster through local manufacturing and distribution ties 2.
  • Renault is exploring similar deals with other automakers, including China’s Chery, another Chinese carmaker. That suggests this market-entry approach may spread across the industry 3.
