Geely unveils AI-powered hybrid system to rival Japan

Geely launched a new hybrid system as it pushes into a market long led by Japanese carmakers.

The Chinese automaker said the system uses AI to manage energy use based on conditions such as temperature and altitude, and will be added this year to models including the Preface, Monjaro, Starray, and Emgrand.

Geely said an Emgrand fitted with i-HEV used 2.22 liters per 100 km in a highway test and set a Guinness World Record, while Yale Zhang, managing director at Automotive Foresight in Shanghai, said the launch could pressure Japanese brands since the Prius debuted in 1997.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Geely’s challenge rests on a hardware advantage and sharp pricing

  • Geely pairs AI-based energy management with a three-speed transmission, which it calls more advanced than the single-speed setups common in comparable hybrid vehicles 1.
  • Its hybrid-focused engine reaches 44.26% thermal efficiency, which the source calls “globally leading” 1.
  • Geely compared its hybrids with rivals and says they accelerate quicker and brake better than the Toyota Camry Hybrid and Honda CR-V e:HEV 1.
  • In Australia, the Geely Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid sport utility vehicle costs almost AU$5,000 less than the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 2.

The hybrid push shifts attention from fuel savings to in-car computing

  • Hybrid competition is moving beyond fuel economy and toward software plus computing performance 3.
  • Toyota and other Japanese automakers may need to raise spending on software and onboard computing, if Geely’s i-HEV works well at scale 3.
  • Geely Holding Group, the parent company of Geely Auto, expects overseas markets to make up more than one-third of deliveries by 2030 4.
  • Hybrids can help expansion in places with weak charging infrastructure 3. Geely leadership also said it will reject “involution,” a Chinese business term for destructive, cutthroat competition, and instead focus on technology, quality, branding, service, and corporate ethics 5.
