The Gates Foundation, the Seattle-based foundation co-founded by Bill Gates, said it plans to spend at least US$1 billion over the next two years to widen access to AI tools, warning that uneven adoption could deepen the gap between rich and poor.

The funding will support AI tools for workers in education, healthcare, and agriculture. It will also help add non-English language sources to datasets used by developers building tools in other languages.

The foundation already has an AI for Equity effort. It also announced a separate partnership with Anthropic to broaden access.

That language focus reflects a wider technical bottleneck.

Stanford Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence said low-resource languages remain underrepresented in large language model development.

Gates also said the foundation plans to give away US$200 billion before shutting down in 2045.
