Gates Foundation to open Singapore office

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has announced plans to establish an office in Singapore.

This initiative aims to enhance collaborations with governments, philanthropies, and institutions across Southeast Asia.

The announcement was made during the Philanthropy Asia Summit 2025 on May 5 by Bill Gates. He spoke on a panel with Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

The Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) is assisting the foundation in setting up operations in the city-state.

Details about the office’s structure were not disclosed, but this decision aligns with the foundation’s broader goals of advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Hari Menon, the foundation’s director for South and Southeast Asia, said Singapore’s leadership in innovation and philanthropy as reason for choosing it as a hub for impactful solutions.

For 2025, the foundation announced an operating budget of US$8.74 billion, with annual distribution targets of US$9 billion.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Singapore is strategically positioning itself as Asia’s philanthropy hub

The Gates Foundation’s decision to establish a Singapore office follows a significant transformation in the city-state’s philanthropy landscape.

Singapore has experienced remarkable growth in philanthropic activity, with total donations to registered charities increasing from S$1.8 billion in 2009 to S$3.2 billion in 2019, representing a 6% annual growth rate 1.

This growth has accelerated recently, with total philanthropic giving reaching S$431 million in 2023—a substantial 96% increase from 2022 2.

The Singapore government has encouraged this development through favorable regulations, tax incentives for charitable contributions, and matching grants to incentivize giving 1.

The city-state has witnessed a ten-fold increase in family offices, with the Monetary Authority of Singapore reporting over 2,000 single-family offices now operating in Singapore, creating a foundation for significant philanthropic activity 3.

Gates Foundation’s move aligns with Singapore’s emergence as a regional center for strategic philanthropy, building on the presence of established local organizations like The Ngee Ann Kongsi, Lee Foundation, and Lien Foundation, which donated a combined S$93.3 million in recent years 1.
