GameStop’s ‘StapleGate’ Switch 2 sells for $250k at auction

A damaged Nintendo Switch 2 console sold for US$250,000 on eBay during a charity auction.

The console, originally priced at US$499.99, was auctioned alongside a stapler and staple that caused the damage.

The incident, referred to as “Staplegate,” occurred during the midnight launch of the Switch 2 on June 5 at GameStop’s Staten Island, New York location.

An employee reportedly stapled receipts too forcefully onto some console boxes, damaging the screens.

GameStop replaced the affected units for customers and later auctioned the damaged console, with proceeds benefiting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

The auctioned console included a certificate of authenticity signed by GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen.

It noted it as the first console “officially stapled” during a product launch. The stapler and staple were included in the auction lot.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Turning mistakes into marketing gold: A rare corporate skill

GameStop’s “Staplegate” response stands in contrast to how most retailers handle marketing blunders, which typically result in brand damage and financial losses.

While brands like J.C. Penney lost 25% of their sales after misguided strategy changes and Target’s Canadian expansion ended in bankruptcy due to operational failures, GameStop managed to transform a potential PR disaster into $250,000 for charity1.

This approach aligns with GameStop’s evolving brand identity, which increasingly emphasizes community engagement over traditional retail metrics.

The success of the stapled Switch auction demonstrates the value of authenticity and humor in crisis management. Rather than hiding the mistake, GameStop embraced it and created a collectible complete with a “certificate of authenticity”2.

This strategy works specifically because GameStop has cultivated a community that responds positively to such initiatives, something many retailers fail to develop when facing their own marketing challenges.
