Gaming industry could gain $22b from AI cost cuts: report
AI tools could cut video game development costs by nearly half and add about US$22 billion in annual profit across the industry Morgan Stanley said.
The bank estimated global gaming spending will reach US$275 billion in 2026, with about US$55 billion reinvested in development and operations, and said lower costs could reduce reliance on new releases.
The gains will likely be uneven, with Tencent, Sony, and Ubisoft better positioned to benefit, while companies such as Playtika and Netmarble, could face more pressure as production brings more competition.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Why platforms with data and IP could lead in AI gaming
- Companies like Tencent and Sony have an edge through distribution, proprietary data, and strong player relationships 1.
- Playtika and Netmarble face more pressure because they do not own strong core intellectual property. AI also makes it easier to build the mid-tier games they often release 1.
- The often-cited cost cut of nearly half sits at the high end. A separate Morgan Stanley analysis puts savings for AAA publishers closer to 15% 2. The idea that AI could build a game from scratch is “laughable,” said Take-Two’s CEO 3.
AI could also change how games are built, sold, and staffed
- Publishers may rely less on risky blockbuster launches. AI could help them keep existing franchises fresh with steady new content 1.
- That approach could keep games alive longer and support steadier revenue from subscriptions and in-game purchases 1.
- AI is not expected to trigger a broad drop in video game developer jobs 4.
- As more projects become worth making, review and integration matter more than early coding. That could raise demand for senior software engineers and game development leads who can oversee a larger slate of complex projects 4.
