GAC takes safety lead on level 4 self-driving cars

Chinese automaker Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) has announced it will take responsibility for the safety of its Level 4 autonomous vehicles.

The statement was made at the Shanghai Auto Show, according to Chinese media outlet Jiemian.

GAC’s Level 4 autonomous models are being developed with its EV subsidiary Aion and ride-hailing company Didi Global.

Demonstrations are planned for parts of Guangzhou and Beijing next year, GAC executive Huang Yongqiang said.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ China’s rapid regulatory evolution reflects the autonomous driving reality gap

GAC’s announcement comes just days after China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology banned terms like “autonomous driving” in vehicle advertisements to prevent consumer misunderstanding about driver-assistance capabilities 1.

This timing is significant as it shows GAC explicitly accepting liability for true Level 4 systems while regulators crack down on overhyped claims about lower-level systems that still require driver supervision.

The regulatory shift follows Beijing’s new autonomous vehicle regulations (effective April 1, 2025) that formalized testing requirements and safety protocols specifically for Level 3 and higher autonomous vehicles 2.

These industry and regulatory moves signal China’s maturing approach to autonomous technology deployment, balancing innovation with safety concerns that emerged after recent high-profile incidents involving autonomous vehicles 3.

Chinese authorities now require companies to use precise SAE automation level terminology (L0-L5) in their marketing, eliminating ambiguous terms that could mislead consumers about the actual capabilities of these systems 4.

2️⃣ Level 4 commitment represents a major liability milestone for automakers

By taking responsibility for Level 4 autonomous vehicles, GAC is crossing a crucial threshold that few global manufacturers have been willing to embrace, accepting legal liability when the car, not the driver, is fully in control 5.

Level 4 autonomy represents “high automation” where vehicles can operate without human intervention within specific geographic areas or conditions, in contrast to Tesla’s current Level 2 systems that require constant driver supervision despite advanced capabilities 6.

This liability commitment signals confidence in GAC’s technology, developed through their ADiGO ecosystem launched in 2019 and enhanced through partnerships with tech giants like Tencent and Huawei 7.
