US FTC warns tech firms on data privacy risks from EU, UK laws

The United States Federal Trade Commission chairman warned Apple, Alphabet, and other tech firms that following UK and EU digital content laws could violate US law if it weakens privacy or data security for American users.

FTC chairman Andrew Ferguson raised concerns about the EU Digital Services Act and the UK Online Safety Act, which target illegal and harmful online content, as well as the UK Investigatory Powers Act.

Ferguson said companies have an incentive to apply uniform global policies, which could risk data security and free expression in the US.

He called Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, X, Signal, and Slack to meet with him and discuss how they plan to balance US compliance with competing pressures from abroad.
