French software firm Dassault pilots autonomous cargo system in SG

French software company Dassault Systèmes and Singapore-based drone startup iHawk Global have launched a pilot for autonomous cargo operations at a 50,000 sq m container yard in Singapore.

The companies are using virtual twin software to test drones and ground rovers before field deployment in GPS-denied areas.

iHawk said its system combines drones and ground rovers to improve navigation within container yards.

The companies said virtual testing on Dassault’s 3DEXPERIENCE platform cut two rounds of physical prototyping, shortened development time ahead of planned commercial deployment in October 2026.

The pilot supports Singapore’s Sea Transport Industry Transformation Map.

Virtual twins are changing how ports run

  • Singapore’s pilot fits a broader shift. In one study, a digital twin simulation trained a reinforcement learning scheduler at an automated container terminal and cut average completion time to 127 minutes from 200 1.
  • Ports also use the technology to keep equipment running. In Hamburg, Germany, a mooring monitoring system combines a digital twin with sensor data to predict equipment failures. Other models help operators plan quay crane maintenance and cut downtime 1.
  • Planning is part of the appeal. Denmark’s Port of Esbjerg built a digital twin to test future projects and daily operations as it works to raise offshore wind turbine transport capacity to 4.5 gigawatts a year from 1.5 gigawatts by 2025 1.

This shift also touches labor, emissions, and competition

  • Autonomous systems such as iHawk’s can take on work in hazardous areas where GPS signals are weak or absent. Similar tools in Italy’s Port of Livorno use virtual reality and augmented reality for safety training, which can reduce how often workers need to enter storage areas 1.
  • Lower energy use can also trim emissions. At Pusan Newport International Terminal in South Korea, a digital twin scheduling method cut carbon emissions by more than 75% against the actual operating case by reducing vessel waiting time near port 1.
  • Real-time operational data is becoming an advantage. Ports with stronger data systems, including Hamburg’s intelligent transport system that brings together traffic and stakeholder data, can give supply chain partners more predictable operations 1.
