French satellite firm replaces CEO as Europe seeks Starlink rival
France-based satellite operator Eutelsat Communications has appointed Jean-François Fallacher as its new CEO, replacing Eva Berneke.
Fallacher, a former CEO of Orange’s French unit, will take over on June 1.
This change comes as Europe aims to create a regional alternative to Elon Musk’s Starlink for satellite internet services.
Eutelsat’s shares dropped 6.1% on May 5, but are still up 76% year-to-date.
Under Berneke’s leadership, Eutelsat acquired OneWeb, gaining access to a low-earth orbit satellite network.
The company now faces challenges, including nearly €2.4 billion (US$2.72 billion) in debt due within four years and the need for substantial financial support.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Europe’s pursuit of satellite independence follows historical pattern
Eutelsat’s positioning as a Starlink alternative reflects a consistent European space strategy dating back decades.
The company was originally established in 1977 by 17 European countries specifically to create satellite infrastructure independent from both American and Soviet influence 1.
This pursuit of technological sovereignty continues today, with Eutelsat’s recent merger with OneWeb creating a constellation of 653 satellites that could serve as Europe’s homegrown alternative to Starlink 2.
The appointment of a telecommunications executive signals Eutelsat’s evolution from a traditional satellite operator to a more integrated telecom player capable of competing in the rapidly growing satellite internet market, projected to expand from $5.6 billion in 2024 to $23.6 billion by 2029 3.
The leadership change comes at a critical moment when Eutelsat has approximately 2,000 user terminals deployed in Ukraine, positioning the company to potentially fill gaps in satellite connectivity in geopolitically sensitive regions 2.
2️⃣ Defense concerns accelerate European space investments
The push to develop a European Starlink alternative is occurring against a backdrop of unprecedented military spending increases across the continent.
