France reports Shein for selling ‘childlike sex dolls’ online
France’s consumer watchdog has reported Shein to authorities for selling sex dolls with childlike appearances on its website.
Shein is a China-founded fast fashion ecommerce company with a large global presence.
The Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) said the online categorisation of these dolls “makes it difficult to doubt the child pornography nature of the content,” according to French media.
The DGCCRF has referred the case to French prosecutors and the online regulator Arcom.
Shein said it immediately delisted the products as soon as it became aware of the issue and is reviewing listings by third-party vendors.
The company said it is investigating how these listings circumvented screening measures and is taking corrective action.
This incident comes as Shein prepares to open its first permanent physical store anywhere in the world, in Paris, which has drawn criticism due to the firm’s labour and environmental record.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
France tests how DSA penalties could reshape marketplace oversight
- DGCCRF flagged Shein, warning that disseminating child pornography via an electronic communications network carries up to seven years in prison with a €100,000 fine under French law 1. The DSA can push penalties far higher with fines up to 6% of global annual turnover 2.
- Shein paid a €150 million cookie penalty in September 3.
- The European Commission (the European Union’s executive arm that enforces the DSA) is already investigating Shein over risks tied to illegal products 1. This childlike doll incident could invite fresh DSA scrutiny.
Compliance vendors can chase very large platforms under tighter DSA oversight
- By November 2024, 23 Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) faced extra DSA duties such as risk systems, audits and periodic transparency reports 4. That shift opens demand for third-party compliance tools.
- Marketplaces must trace traders; prioritize trusted flaggers (organizations certified by the European Commission whose notices must be prioritized); apply “reasonable checks” on listings; and remove illegal content 5. Shein acknowledged that banned items slipped past screening measures 3.
- Trust and safety vendors should invest in image matching for prohibited goods, automated seller verification, and DSA-ready audit trails. They include X (formerly Twitter); TikTok; AliExpress; Meta; and Temu 4.
