France pledges $1.5b for quantum, microchips

France will add 1 billion euros (US$1.16 billion) for quantum technology and 550 million euros (US$639 million) for microelectronics on May 22 as countries race to build emerging computing capacity, said President Emmanuel Macron.

The move came a day after the Trump administration outlined plans to take US$2 billion in equity stakes in nine quantum computing companies.

Paris-based quantum startup Alice & Bob said it will receive part of the French funding and support from Nvidia venture arm NVentures, and it is part of the PROQCIMA program to produce two French-designed universal quantum computer prototypes by 2032.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Alice & Bob is betting on a different path for quantum error correction

  • Alice & Bob builds around “cat qubits,” a kind of quantum bit that cuts one of the two main error types at the hardware level 1.
  • The design could shrink the physical qubits needed for a fault-tolerant machine by as much as 200 times versus rival approaches 2.
  • That smaller footprint fits France’s PROQCIMA program, which aims to deliver two French-built prototypes of universal quantum computers by 2032 3.
  • Nvidia’s backing also has a technical side. Alice & Bob is working with Nvidia’s CUDA-Q platform, a software toolkit for combining quantum and conventional computing, on hybrid quantum-classical workflows 1.

Tech independence is shaping the quantum race

  • Governments want stronger control over this technology. “We have the means to be the winners of this race” 3, said Emmanuel Macron, president of France.
  • Commercial returns still look far off. Alice & Bob targets a 100-logical-qubit machine by 2030, yet that scale would likely handle only narrow chemistry tasks while wider uses need millions of qubits 4.
  • The field is moving toward hybrid setups where quantum processors serve as accelerators for conventional supercomputers, similar to GPUs in AI 2.
