Foxconn to invest up to $3b annually in AI
Foxconn plans to invest US$5 billion annually over the next three to five years, with US$2 billion to US$3 billion of that total directed toward AI, chairman Young Liu told Reuters during a recent visit to Tokyo.
Foxconn, a major contract electronics manufacturer based in Taiwan, expects AI to account for over half of its yearly capital spending, with its cloud and networking business—including AI servers—outperforming its consumer electronics segment for two straight quarters.
Liu also said the company is in talks with the Japanese government about potential investments in AI and EVs, but did not provide specifics.
He expects China’s EV market to consolidate soon due to intense competition and reduced government support, predicting that unprofitable startups may exit the sector.
Liu noted that outsourcing could rise in the EV sector, similar to trends seen in early personal computing.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Foxconn aims to be the Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) for hyperscalers (large cloud providers) building Application-specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) gear
- Foxconn plans $2–3B in annual AI capital spending, about 1–2% of the projected $187B AI server market in 2024 1.
- The company has orders from Amazon Web Services (AWS) for Graviton 3 and 4 chips, Oracle for AI servers, plus AWS ASIC solutions 21. ASIC servers are forecast to reach 26% of the AI server market in 2024 21.
- An NVIDIA partnership has Foxconn manufacturing Blackwell GPU reference designs 13. It targets leadership as the biggest supplier of NVL36 and NVL72 racks (NVIDIA Blackwell-based reference rack systems configured with 36 or 72 GPUs, typically with high-density power with liquid cooling) while it can ride NVIDIA’s 64% AI chip share plus the Blackwell replacement cycle that starts in 2025 13.
Server ODMs and component suppliers can watch distressed EV startups in China that are liquidating manufacturing assets
- HiPhi’s parent Human Horizons (a Shanghai-based premium EV maker) entered bankruptcy in August 2024 4. Distressed EV sites can offer cleanrooms, precision lines, plus auctioned assets like rare earth materials or battery lines that fit server power systems and thermal management.
- The timing matches Taiwanese AI server makers planning $3–5B per factory in Texas 5. Buying liquidated equipment from China could trim upfront capital spending.
