Foxconn to expand AI server production for Nvidia in US

Hon Hai Precision Industry, also known as Foxconn, has agreed to sell its Ohio electric vehicle (EV) plant for US$375 million to Crescent Dune LLC, according to exchange filings on August 4, 2025.

The Taiwanese electronics manufacturer acquired the facility from Lordstown Motors in 2022.

Hon Hai said it will continue to occupy the site but did not provide further details.

A person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg the company plans to use the plant for AI server production, a shift from its earlier EV focus.

Hon Hai is a major server production partner for Nvidia and has expanded AI server assembly in the US.

The company said proceeds from the sale will be reinvested in the US.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Failed EV ventures create unexpected opportunities for AI infrastructure

Hon Hai’s transformation of the Ohio facility reveals how quickly industrial priorities can shift in response to market realities.

The company acquired the plant from Lordstown Motors in 2022, but Lordstown’s electric vehicle efforts collapsed amid severe financial strain and fraud allegations that led to CEO and CFO resignations1.

Lordstown had promised to revitalize the former GM plant with electric pickup production but faced production delays and questions about exaggerated preorders1.

The facility’s pivot to AI servers demonstrates how manufacturers can repurpose industrial assets when initial business models fail, especially given the explosive growth in AI infrastructure demand.

This reflects broader challenges in the EV startup space, where companies struggled to deliver on ambitious promises despite significant initial investments and partnerships.

2️⃣ AI server demand creates massive revenue opportunities for contract manufacturers

Hon Hai’s strategic shift illustrates the extraordinary financial potential in AI server manufacturing compared to traditional electronics assembly.
