Foxconn sells Ohio EV plant after three yearsโ€™ production

Foxconn has sold its former General Motors factory in Lordstown, Ohio, after three years of limited EV production.

The Taiwanese electronics company sold the facility and land for about US$88 million, and related machinery and equipment for around US$287 million, according to filings with the Taiwan stock exchange.

The buyer, Crescent Dune LLC, is described by Foxconn as an existing business partner. However, public records show the entity was created in Delaware less than two weeks before the sale.

Foxconn acquired the factory in 2021 for US$230 million from EV startup Lordstown Motors, which filed for bankruptcy in 2023 after disputes with Foxconn.

Other EV companies that planned to build at the factory, including IndiEV and Monarch Tractor, have also faced setbacks. IndiEV later declared bankruptcy.

Foxconn said it will continue manufacturing products for customers at the Lordstown facility.

๐Ÿง  Food for thought

1๏ธโƒฃ Foxconnโ€™s US manufacturing promises consistently fall short of ambitious targets

The Ohio EV factory sale represents the second major manufacturing disappointment for Foxconn in the United States, following a similar pattern of overpromising and underdelivering.

In Wisconsin, Foxconn promised a $10 billion LCD manufacturing facility that would create 13,000 jobs, but by 2018 had hired only 178 full-time employees against a target of 2601.

The company ultimately shifted the Wisconsin project from manufacturing to a research hub in 2019, abandoning its original LCD production plans1.

The Ohio facility followed a similar trajectory, purchased for $230 million in 2021 with promises of becoming the โ€œmost important electric vehicle manufacturing and R&D hub in North America,โ€ only to be sold three years later after failing to establish meaningful production.

This pattern suggests challenges in Foxconnโ€™s ability to execute large-scale manufacturing operations in the US market, despite the companyโ€™s success in contract electronics manufacturing in Asia.

2๏ธโƒฃ Strategic pivot toward AI infrastructure reflects broader market realities

Foxconnโ€™s decision to convert the former EV factory into AI server production demonstrates how quickly the company is adapting to shifting technology demands and market opportunities.
