Foxconn resumes iPhone hiring in China after tariff exemptions

Foxconn Technology Group has resumed hiring at its iPhone manufacturing facility in Zhengzhou, China, after a brief pause.

Jobseekers and a company manager confirmed to the South China Morning Post that recruitment restarted this week.

The facility had suspended hiring last week but typically recruits year-round to meet high production demands.

A recruitment notice posted on April 13, shows Foxconn is looking for temporary workers on three-month contracts, offering 20 yuan (US$2.70) per hour.

The hiring resumption comes after the US temporarily exempted electronic products, including smartphones, from new tariffs. However, officials noted that semiconductor products may still face tariffs in the future.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Apple-Foxconn supply chain represents decades of investment that can’t be easily unwound

The temporary tariff exemption for smartphones highlights how deeply embedded Apple’s manufacturing is in China, making it nearly impossible to quickly relocate production.

Apple has established an intricate supply chain in China since the 1990s, with over 90% of its products manufactured there despite spending approximately $60 billion on American suppliers in 2018 1.

Moving iPhone production to the U.S. would be prohibitively expensive, potentially tripling the price from $1,000 to over $3,000 according to industry analysts 2.

Even diversifying to other countries presents significant challenges, with Tim Cook expressing concerns about whether the U.S. labor force could handle the skilled manufacturing required for iPhones 3.

This explains why Foxconn’s Zhengzhou facility, the world’s largest iPhone factory, remains crucial to Apple’s operations despite trade tensions. Relocating would require years of transition and face substantial execution risks.

2️⃣ Tariff uncertainty creates ripple effects throughout global tech manufacturing

The brief hiring suspension at Foxconn’s Zhengzhou facility demonstrates how quickly tariff announcements can disrupt operational planning in global supply chains.

When Trump initially announced new tariffs on Chinese imports, Foxconn temporarily halted recruitment at its massive iPhone plant, only resuming after the administration granted temporary exemptions for electronics 4.
