Foxconn, Nvidia to build AI center with 100 MW capacity
Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer, announced plans to construct its AI center in phases, in collaboration with Nvidia.
The facility is projected to have a power capacity of 100 megawatts upon completion.
The announcement was made by Foxconn Chairman Young Liu during the Computex trade show in Taipei.
However, the company did not provide further details regarding the project’s timeline or specific plans.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ AI data centers’ voracious power demand signals major infrastructure challenges
The Foxconn-Nvidia AI center’s 100-megawatt power target highlights the extraordinary energy requirements becoming standard for advanced AI facilities.
This aligns with industry forecasts predicting AI data centers could consume up to 68 gigawatts globally by 2027, nearly equivalent to California’s entire power capacity 1.
AI infrastructure is projected to account for approximately 2% of global electricity consumption by 2025, creating unprecedented demands on power grids 2.
The scale of these energy requirements is forcing companies to prioritize power availability in their site selection, with electricity capacity increasingly becoming the limiting factor for AI expansion rather than land or workforce considerations.
This trend explains why Foxconn is planning a phased approach, as securing sufficient power access has become a critical bottleneck for AI facility development across the industry.
2️⃣ Foxconn’s ambitious tech announcements have a checkered implementation history
Foxconn has established a pattern of announcing grand technological investments that frequently fall short of initial promises or undergo significant downsizing.
In Wisconsin, Foxconn’s widely publicized $10 billion LCD manufacturing facility with 13,000 jobs was later dramatically scaled back to $672 million with only 1,454 workers 3.
Similar patterns emerged with Foxconn’s past commitments in Pennsylvania, where a 2013 pledge to create 500 jobs never materialized 4, and in India, where operations were suspended in 2014 due to a lack of orders despite previous investment announcements 5.
