Foxconn to invest $1b in US for AI, robotics

Foxconn Technology, a metal casing supplier owned by Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision Industry, plans to invest US$1 billion in the US over the next decade.

The company said its board approved the investment as part of a strategy to focus on precision mold development, smart manufacturing, robotics, advanced automation, and AI.

Foxconn Technology aims to integrate its hardware expertise with AI to develop products for robotics, drones, healthcare, and cooling solutions.

The firm’s acting president, Pan Yen-jen, said the investment will strengthen its North American presence and support digital transformation.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Foxconn’s track record on US investment promises raises questions about execution

This $1 billion commitment follows Foxconn’s troubled 2017 Wisconsin deal, which promised $10 billion and 13,000 jobs but faced significant delivery challenges.

The Wisconsin project, heavily promoted by the Trump administration, was expected to create jobs with an average salary of $53,000 plus benefits, but critics highlighted Foxconn’s poor track record of fulfilling commitments in other countries like Indonesia and India1.

The state provided $3 billion in subsidies for the Wisconsin facility, raising concerns about whether the promised economic benefits would materialize2.

Harvard Business School analysts noted sustainability concerns about Foxconn’s job creation, particularly given the company’s history of automation and reliance on robotics3.

The current announcement’s focus on “smart manufacturing, robotics and advanced automation” suggests similar automation-heavy approaches that could limit actual job creation despite the substantial investment commitment.

2️⃣ The investment aligns with Foxconn’s strategic pivot toward AI infrastructure dominance

This US investment fits Foxconn’s broader transformation from traditional contract manufacturing to AI infrastructure leadership.

AI servers now account for 40% of Foxconn’s total sales, with the company controlling over 40% of the global AI server market through partnerships with NVIDIA4.

The company reported 15.82% revenue growth in Q2 2025, driven largely by AI server demand, and its AI server profits surged 91% year-on-year in Q1 20254.
