Foxconn could develop AI hardware in US with OpenAI
Taiwan-based electronics giant Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., widely known as Foxconn, is set to develop AI infrastructure hardware in Ohio under a partnership with ChatGPT creator OpenAI, the company’s chairman said.
Hon Hai will begin research and development in San Jose, California, before shifting production to its Ohio facility, which was previously used for EV manufacturing and is now focused on AI data centers.
The agreement covers design work and preparations for US manufacturing of next-generation AI data center hardware, with no immediate purchase commitments.
OpenAI will have early access to evaluate the systems and an option to buy the devices.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
OpenAI’s hardware independence isn’t guaranteed despite the Foxconn deal
- OpenAI still has to buy $250 billion of Azure services under its Microsoft deal 1, which limits how much server gear it can source and run outside Azure.
- Microsoft has sole Azure API rights until Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) arrives 1, so contracts may constrain OpenAI’s self-hosted deployments beyond technical or budget factors.
- The Foxconn pact has no near term purchase commitments or cash duties, so it looks like flexibility and signaling.
- OpenAI also uses CoreWeave plus Oracle, AWS and Google Cloud 2, yet the $250 billion Azure commitment makes Microsoft the main provider through 2032 1.
US-based AI hardware suppliers can target Foxconn’s Ohio facility transition
- Foxconn’s Ohio site covers about 6.2 million square feet and employs over 400 people 3. That shift from Electric Vehicle (EV) work to AI gear creates demand for power systems, liquid cooling, racks, plus compliance testing.
- Component makers and logistics firms should find Foxconn’s buying contacts now. The company uses a formal vendor program, so early ties can lock in preferred standing before volume ramps.
- The site’s EV past likely means limited AI data center gear such as high-density cooling and precision environmental controls, which opens near-term opportunities for specialized infrastructure vendors.
- Suppliers should watch Foxconn projects with SoftBank in Japan and Intrinsic robotics factory plans, since strong US partnerships could expand contracts across those efforts.
