Foreign-branded phone shipments in China soar 128% in Nov: report

Foreign-branded phone shipments in China more than doubled in November 2025, according to data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

Shipments reached 6.9 million units, up 128.4% year-on-year.

This category includes brands such as Apple, which launched its iPhone 17 series in China in September 2025.

Total phone shipments in the country rose 1.9% to 30.2 million units during the same period.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Foreign-brand jump tied to channel inventory after 11.11 Apple lift

  • Foreign phone shipments rose 128.4% year over year, a metric based on channel shipments reported by authorities, not retail sell-through 1.
  • iPhone 17 lifted Singles’ Day results, with 26% of smartphones sold during the event 2. November numbers capture shipments to distributors and retailers across foreign brands, which differ from point-of-sale demand.
  • To separate real momentum from inventory build, the market needs brand-level splits and November sell-through data for 11.11. CAICT’s aggregate figures omit that detail.
  • Huawei’s Mate 80 arrived after Singles’ Day 3. Huawei counts as a domestic brand, so any November channel stocking would not appear in CAICT’s foreign-brand category.

Trade-in and recommerce firms can ride a faster foreign-phone replacement cycle

  • Foreign shipment growth will push more trade-ins and used devices into secondary markets. That helps recommerce platforms (used-device resale marketplaces), refurbishers and device financing firms.
  • China’s government subsidy program offers 15% discounts up to RMB 500 on devices under RMB 6,000 4, which speeds up upgrades and yields better used inventory.
  • Companies in device logistics, quality grading or cross-border export can estimate the 2025 China trade-in market. Focus on cities or demographics with the highest turnover.
  • The foldable smartphone market is projected to grow from RMB 39.181 billion in 2024 to RMB 83.557 billion by 2030 5, creating premium trade-in inventory openings as early adopters upgrade often.
