Ford invests $5b in next-gen EVs to compete with China
Ford is investing US$5 billion in two factories to develop a new low-cost universal electric vehicle platform, aiming to produce affordable EVs that can compete with Chinese models.
The company plans to overhaul its manufacturing process by moving away from the traditional assembly line at its Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky.
The first vehicle, a midsize four-door electric pickup priced around US$30,000, is expected to launch in 2027.
Ford will adopt large castings and separate assembly lines to cut production costs and speed up manufacturing.
The new EV platform will have 20% fewer parts and 40% fewer fasteners, reducing assembly time and work stations by 40%.
The Louisville plant will retain about 2,200 jobs, while 600 workers will be offered buyouts or transfers.
The investment includes US$3 billion for a Michigan battery factory using technology licensed from China’s CATL.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Ford’s reinvention echoes its original manufacturing revolution over a century ago
Ford’s $5 billion manufacturing overhaul parallels the company’s historic transformation of automobile production with the Model T and assembly line.
When Ford introduced the assembly line in 1913, it revolutionized manufacturing by dramatically cutting production costs and time. The Model T’s price dropped from $950 in 1908 to just $300 by 1924 while production soared from 10,000 units to over 2 million annually 1.
The current initiative shows similar ambition, with Ford promising 40% fewer work stations, 40% shorter assembly time, and 20% fewer parts in their new EV platform.
CEO Jim Farley explicitly referenced “tearing up the moving assembly line concept” that Henry Ford pioneered, suggesting the company recognizes it needs another fundamental manufacturing breakthrough to remain competitive.
The original assembly line allowed Ford to make cars accessible to the masses, and the company is betting this new approach will help them compete with low-cost Chinese manufacturers while maintaining American labor.
2️⃣ Automation advancement comes with predictable workforce reduction despite “job security” messaging
