Ford, GM move to extend $7,500 EV lease tax credit

Ford and General Motors have launched programs to help dealers keep offering the US$7,500 federal tax credit on EV leases beyond its September 30, 2025 expiration.

Their financing arms purchase EVs from dealer inventories by making down payments, allowing them to claim the credit.

Dealers then lease the vehicles to customers as usual, factoring the subsidy into lease rates.

The tax credit is ending due to a bill signed in July by President Donald Trump, and analysts warn EV sales and leasing could drop sharply.

Ford and GM developed these programs after talks with the Internal Revenue Service, though it is not clear if other automakers will follow.
