Flipkart to hire 5,000 as it expands AI, fintech

Flipkart plans to hire 5,000 employees in 2025 as it expands operations in quick commerce, AI, and fintech. Many of the new roles will support Flipkart Minutes and Super.money.

The hiring aligns with the company’s efforts to strengthen these sectors, prepare for a potential IPO, and move its legal base from Singapore to India.

Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy reported a 20% to 25% increase in customers and orders, with expectations to reach 30% growth by June.

Flipkart is increasing its AI investments six-fold and focusing on its travel and grocery businesses. It aims to target Gen Z consumers and align grocery with quick commerce.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Flipkart’s strategic hiring reflects its evolutionary growth pattern

Flipkart’s plan to hire 5,000 employees continues a pattern of strategic talent acquisition during key growth phases.

When scaling its engineering team between 2010-2015, Flipkart grew from nearly zero to approximately 1,100 engineers under former CTO Amod Malviya’s leadership 1.

The company has historically targeted elite technical institutions, making 118 job offers at IITs in just three and a half days during a 2013 recruitment drive 2.

Flipkart’s current focus on quick commerce and fintech aligns with its previous expansion strategies, where hiring has consistently preceded major business pivots.

The company has maintained its employer brand appeal throughout its evolution from an online bookstore founded in 2007 to a Walmart-owned e-commerce giant valued at $20 billion during its 2018 acquisition 3.

This hiring push demonstrates how Flipkart balances talent acquisition with financial discipline, even as the company aims to reduce monthly cash burn from $40 million to $20 million while preparing for a potential IPO.

2️⃣ India’s quick commerce explosion drives massive infrastructure and talent needs

Flipkart’s race to establish 800 dark stores by year-end reflects the explosive growth projections for India’s quick commerce sector.

The Indian quick commerce market is forecast to grow from $300 million in 2022 to $7.1 billion by FY25—a staggering 24-fold increase in gross order value 4.
