Flipkart tests food delivery to take on Zomato and Swiggy

Flipkart, Walmart’s Bengaluru-based ecommerce company, is internally testing a food delivery service in India as it prepares to challenge Zomato and Swiggy, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The service appears as a separate tab in Flipkart’s app. It uses restaurants listed through the Open Network for Digital Commerce, a government-backed network that connects buyers and sellers across platforms, as well as restaurants signed up directly.

It also relies on a dedicated rider fleet from Flipkart’s logistics arm, Ekart, and the trial has expanded to more than 8,000 employees.

Flipkart has told restaurants it expects a public launch by the end of October and expansion to five or six cities by year-end, National Restaurant Association of India president Sagar Daryani said.

Amazon trialed food delivery in India in 2020, while Uber exited the market that year.
