Flipkart closes Israel R&D center as cost cuts widen

Flipkart is closing its research and development center in Tel Aviv and laying off the entire team as part of a global restructuring.

Flipkart, an ecommerce company based in India and majority-owned by Walmart, set up the Israeli R&D center in 2018 after acquiring Upstream Commerce, a local startup focused on dynamic pricing and market analysis.

About 40 employees are affected, with some staying up to four months to transfer knowledge to engineering teams in India.

The move is part of wider cost-cutting measures at Flipkart, which has recently reduced its global workforce by as much as 30% ahead of a planned IPO in 2026.

The company cited higher operating costs in Israel and recent security concerns, including an Iranian missile strike near its office, as factors in its decision.
