Flipkart, Amazon expand quick commerce in India

Flipkart, owned by Walmart, has crossed more than 800 dark stores for its Minutes quick commerce service and plans to double that by end-2026, UBS said, raising pressure in India’s fast delivery market, where profitability remains under pressure.

India now has more than 6,000 dark stores, Bernstein said, and market leader Blinkit runs over 2,200, while Amazon has built about 450 to 500 sites, with 330 to 370 operating, UBS said.

Analysts said demand and profits remain strongest in large cities because higher order density lifts store use, even as Flipkart pushes into smaller towns and uses discounts to win users.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The race for stores is masking a looming market saturation

  • Dark stores keep multiplying, yet the Indian quick-commerce market likely tops out at about 12,000 locations overall 1.
  • India already has more than 6,000 dark stores, and current rollouts are steering the sector toward roughly 70% of that ceiling, so the grab for territory looks close to finished 1.
  • Profit depends on how well each site runs, with about 300 to 400 orders a day per store needed to break even 2.
  • The gap in unit economics remains wide. Blinkit loses about 1% of an order’s value, while Swiggy Instamart, the instant-delivery arm of food delivery company Swiggy, loses about 12%, so more stores alone will not fix the math 1.

Rapid expansion fuels a precarious labor model and regulatory scrutiny

  • The dark store surge is swelling India’s gig workforce, a labor pool of people working short-term, app-based jobs, and it could reach 23.5 million workers by 2030 3.
  • Companies often call delivery workers “partners.” Gig workers often miss employee status, plus standard protections and benefits like social security and health coverage 4.
  • Ten-minute delivery targets add safety strain. Gig workers report speeding through traffic to hit tight deadlines, which raises crash risk 4.
  • Politicians have called it “ten-minute delivery cruelty.” Traditional retailer associations have also asked the government for protection from what they view as unfair competition 5.
