Flipkart, Amazon expand dark stores as quick commerce profits slow

Flipkart and Amazon are rapidly expanding dark-store networks in India even as quick‑commerce pioneers have slowed expansion to focus on profitability amid debate over employment conditions in the last-mile.

Flipkart, a Walmart-owned Indian ecommerce firm, launched its quick‑commerce service Minutes in August 2024.

Sources said it has been adding about 100 dark stores per month this year.

The company expects to reach around 1,200 stores by June, up from roughly 750–800 currently.

Minutes operates in about 70–75 cities and aims for 220 to 250 cities by June.

Amazon has accelerated Amazon Now from December and is expected to reach about 500 dark stores soon.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Reliance’s hybrid model reshapes quick commerce

  • Reliance JioMart, Reliance Retail’s online grocery service, handled close to 1.6 Mn orders per day, near Blinkit’s 2 Mn, above Swiggy Instamart’s 1.2.3 Mn, and ahead of Zepto at a reported 1.4.5 Mn 1.
  • Reliance is using existing retail outlets for fast deliveries rather than building a new dark store network, and it claimed to be contribution-margin positive, meaning it earns money on each order after direct costs like picking and delivery, before corporate overhead 1.
  • It also draws on established supply strength, including its role as one of India’s largest vendors of fruits and vegetables, according to Reliance Retail CFO Dinesh Taluja, which can lift margins while cutting costs in a cash-burning segment 1.

The race moves beyond speed toward more categories and public funding

  • Swiggy and Zepto are seeking ’215,000 crore from public markets as spending rises in their rivalry with other players 2.
  • Product ranges are widening past groceries. Flipkart Minutes delivers mobiles and electronics in 15 to 20 minutes, according to Flipkart’s head of Minutes 3.
  • Higher-margin goods can help profits. Satish Meena of Datum Intelligence, a market research firm, said non-grocery items have grown to nearly 20% on average across quick commerce players 3.
